Match-Fixing in PSL
In 2017, the Pakistan Super League experienced one of the most severe match-fixing bans in its history and even worse for its image. It involved Islamabad United players Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif, both of whom were embroiled in allegations of spot fixing throughout the league fixtures. Information indicating they had undertaken to bowl contracted dot balls to a bookmaker suspiciously appeared in the league. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) commenced and concluded a detailed background examination, which resulted in both players being convicted.
Sharjeel Khan was banned for 5 years (some of which was suspended), and Khalid Latif was banned or 5 years and fined. The scandal temporarily sulled the image of the league, but it also acted as a catalyst for the introduction of stronger anti-corruption systems in cricket. After that, the PCB has set and approved new more stringent rules to deter such cases, protecting the league’s reputation.
